"Like a snake's jaw": improving a connector through biomimicry

What if an electrical connector looked like a snake’s jaw?

This is the challenge that a team of R&D engineers from Sicame Group set out to tackle in order to optimise a connector used to join electrical cables, and that is highlighted in the film "Like a Snake’s Jaw".

The Group collaborated with research engineers from Ceebios (Centre for Studies and Expertise in Biomimicry) to improve its electrical connectors by observing and drawing inspiration from the way living organisms grip and pierce, and more specifically by studying the Gabon viper.

Following a six-month research phase and testing in a laboratory of Sicame Group, the anatomical characteristics of the snake’s jaw enabled the creation of a more robust connector, simpler to install and with fewer parts, which ensures the transmission of electricity from solar farms.

A big thank you to the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region for helping to fund the project, and to La belle société production, which produced the film for the web documentary series Nature = Futur, broadcast on various platforms and on television.

Sicame Group, for whom innovation is one of the core values, continues to adapt to new approaches, as demonstrated by this biomimicry project in the electrical industry.
